Week 1: Saturday, September 27th 2008
Media 101 (Basics of working with the media) Lindsey Scott, Head of Communications for Help the Aged Scotland, will run this first session. Lindsey has been an accredited trainer with the Thomson Foundation and the Nordic/Sadec Journalism School whilst working in Sub-Saharan Africa. Since then he has lectured in Journalism & Communications at Forth Valley College in Falkirk.The session will cover the basics for working with the media, particularly local media, run through the types of Scottish media, what ‘news’ actually is, and how to write a good press release.Marketing and self-published promotionOwen Davis will facilitate this session. Owen has previously worked on award winning communications for Global Action Plan and is currently in charge of media, printed and web communications for Friends of the Earth Scotland. This session will cover marketing for a project, campaign or other work. Learn about the importance of the audience and techniques to help you communicate your message or argument. There will also be tips on creating websites or newsletters that people read.

Week 2: Saturday, October 4th 2008
Demystifying the mediaMeet a journalist and discover they’re real people too! This session is facilitated by Mike Higgins, a journalist working in broadcast, print and online for major broadcasters in the UK. He also specialises in media training. His assignments have taken him to Africa, Eastern Europe and the USA, as well as throughout Britain.Learn about the daily life of a journalist, how they choose the news, how you can make their life easier and how you can get more coverage in the process. This session will give you practical experience of a media interview situation.Public presentation skills and confidenceThis session will cover preparing and structuring a public presentation, it will give you better public speaking techniques and help you conquer those nerves. This session will be run by Clare Symonds from Friends of the Earth Scotland.Clare has worked as a sustainable development officer in a local authority, and as an Environment and Community Project Officer in a regeneration programme. She has used her project development and community engagement methods to deliver training on a wide variety of topics, including the Agents for Environmental Justice course.
