ENERGY EFFICIENCY IS STILL THE MISSING LINK IN EFFORTS TO TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE

Commenting on the launch of the Energy Saving Scotland network and the announcement by Jim Mather MSP, Energy Minister, that an Energy Efficiency Action plan will be published this year [1], Chas Booth from the Association for the Conservation of Energy said,

“The launch of the Energy Saving Scotland network is welcome, but it is disappointing that, more than a year into office, we have still not yet seen an energy efficiency action plan from the Scottish Government. The Scottish economy loses an estimated £1.3bn on wasted energy every year [2], and it’s vital we take concerted action to address that. The Government must set ambitious targets for energy efficiency, and bold policies to deliver those targets. “

Echoing comments made by Richard Lochhead MSP, then Shadow Energy Minister, in 2004 [3], Stuart Hay, Head of Projects and Campaigns for Friends of the Earth Scotland, said,

“The lack of any serious targets or a properly resourced action plan on energy efficiency is still the missing link in the Government’s efforts to tackle climate change. Nearly a third of our climate emissions come from our homes [4], so investment in energy efficiency and microgeneration will help tackle climate change, as well as cutting fuel bills in this era of sky-rocketing energy prices.”
