Government removes red tape - Friends of the Earth Scotland comment

Opens door to home renewables

Friends of the Earth Scotland were today celebrating a campaign victory after the Scottish Government's moves to strip the red tape away from homeowners wanting to install micro-renewables [1], such as solar panels. The pressure group has lobbied the Government for over a year [2] for this long-overdue consultation, which should help remove out of date planning requirements.

Liz Murray, Campaigns Officer for Friends of the Earth Scotland, said:

"The Government is right to highlight the urgent action needed to tackle climate change. Micro scale renewable energy has great potential to reduce climate change emissions from Scotland's homes and we welcome this move to reduce the red tape currently facing householders who want to generate their own clean, green energy at home. Scotland has fallen behind England in making these changes, so it is vital now that the Scottish Government continues with this process with a greater sense of urgency, to ensure that we don't fall any further behind."
