Gift aid: Hope. Photo: Eduardo Schäfer. If you are a taxpayer we can reclaim the basic rate income tax or capital gains tax you have paid on all donations through Gift Aid.
We can reclaim the tax you have already paid on the 'gross' equivalent of your donation - the amount before basic rate tax was deducted. This reclaimed tax amounts to 25p per pound that you give, at no extra cost to you.
An extra £0.25 per pound may not seem like much, but if all our regular donors signed up to gift aid, it would total over £50,000 which would go directly to campaigning.
For donations between 6 April 2008 and 5 April 2011 we will also get a separate government supplement of three pence on every pound you give.
All you need to do is tick the Gift Aid declaration box on the online form when you join or make a donation. This declaration allows us to benefit from the tax that you have already paid on the money you give to us.
Claiming back higher rate tax
If you pay higher rate tax, you can claim the difference between the higher rate of tax (40%) and the basic rate of tax (20%) on the total (gross) value of your donation.
For example, if you donate £100, the total value of your donation to Friends of the Earth Scotland is £125 - so you can claim back 20% of this (£25) for yourself. You can make this claim on your Self Assessment tax return.
Thank you for your support.
