Renewables
Climate change campaign

Natural forms of energy surround us - and they can be used to power our vehicles, homes and business.

With around 23% of the total European wind resource, a very large part of
the UK's marine energy resource and opportunities for biomass, the potential
for renewable energy development in Scotland is enormous.

Studies have shown that Scotland could generate more than its total electricity use from renewable sources without damaging any designated nature conservation areas.

Realising this renewable energy potential and making energy efficiency improvements will enable Scotland to both reduce its climate change emissions and rule out new nuclear build.

Our report 'The Power of Scotland' sets out how Scotland could tackle climate change without the need for nuclear power.

Friends of the Earth Scotland is campaigning for:
  • a Scottish energy strategy that includes targets for energy efficiency, overall energy consumption and renewables sources of non-electricity energy use e.g. transport
  • the increased use of all forms of renwewable energy technologies (wave, tidal, solar, wind and biomass)
  • increased support for smaller scale renewable developments which offer greater opportunities to local communities and householders
  • support mechanisms (such as a Scottish loan scheme) to support community ownership of renewable projects
  • strategic planning guidance to improve delivery of renewable projects by reducing the risks of conflicts and lengthy delays, steering proposals away from the most sensitive sites and avoiding excessive cumulative impact.
