Climate campaigners celebrate strong Scottish law!

Friends of the Earth Scotland campaigners are delighted that MSPs have today beefed up the Scottish Climate Change Bill.

The legislation now requires early action to cut emissions, with a target of 42% reduction in Scotland’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. The 42% figure is the toughest statutory target in the industrialised world, and sets a precedent for other developed nations ahead of the international negotiations at Copenhagen.

Holyrood also voted to establish a duty on public bodies to reduce emissions, acknowledging that all sectors in Scotland need to play their part in tackling dangerous climate change.

Climate justice and climate science tell us we urgently need to make emission cuts of at least 42% by 2020. The technology exists to deliver them. The Scottish Government must now exercise the political will to make it so.

After two years of campaigning, the Climate Change (Scotland) Act will not be the end of the process, but the beginning of a transition to a low carbon society. We will be there to fight for the right policies on energy, transport, food and waste.

Friends of the Earth Scotland would like to thank all our supporters, donors and colleagues in the Stop Climate Chaos Scotland coalition, who worked so hard to make this happen.
