Big ask successOur Big Ask Scotland campaign called on the Scottish Parliament to introduce a strong climate change law. Our campaign was backed by thousands of supporters and several Scottish celebrities and we are delighted that Scotland now has world leading climate change legislation.
As a member of the Stop Climate Chaos Scotland coalition, we also worked alongside many other organsiations to deliver our campaign.
The legislation now requires early action to cut emissions, with a target of 42% reduction in Scotland’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2020. The 42% figure is the toughest statutory target in the industrialised world, and sets a precedent for other developed nations ahead of the international negotiations at Copenhagen.
Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) also voted to establish a duty on public bodies to reduce emissions, acknowledging that all sectors in Scotland need to play their part in tackling dangerous climate change.
We urgently need to make emission cuts of at least 42% by 2020. The technology exists to deliver these cuts. The Scottish Government must now exercise the political will ensure they happen.
After two years of campaigning, the Climate Change (Scotland) Act will not be the end of the process, but the beginning of a transition to a low carbon society. We will be there to fight for the right policies on energy, transport, food and waste.
